Quest not so foreign in Foreign Correspondent’s Club

Probably one of Hong Kong's most sophisticated private clubs, The Foreign Correspondents' Club (FCC) is a members-only club popular with journalists and diplomats that shares the very historic Old Dairy Farm Depot and the Fringe Club arts and performance centre. The brick and stucco low-rise structure was built in 1913 and was used as a cold-storage warehouse for ice and dairy products in the days before refrigerators and air conditioners were every day household appliances.

The FCC first occupied the structure in 1982 and has invested heavily to accentuate the lasting architectural merit of the building. The interior today, with its dark wood panelling and long bar is a classic reminder of colonial times. The décor and atmosphere seems to summon the spirits (both with us and departed) of the colourful and esteemed characters who have made the club their favourite Hong Kong haunt throughout the years.

A tricky installation

The upstairs loft area features a fine dining restaurant and also functions as a live music space for performances fitting the stunning environment. Installation and equipment selection was quite challenging as the heritage nature of the building made installation of a modern sound system.

Light weight and 9 rigging points makes for many installation choices

Four HPI 110 speakers and one M210 Sub give hifi quality smooth coverage

The sonic qualities, dispersion characteristics and light weight of the Quest HPI-110 speakers coupled with the 9 internal rigging points made this potentially problematic installation quick and relatively easy.  Big sub bass was not necessary and a single M 210S sub bass was enough to support the full range satellite boxes in delivering a very natural and intelligible sound in a potentially reverberant venue. The live music is mainly acoustic in nature so very high fidelity and uniform coverage audio was essential.

The resulting installation achieves the goal for any of this type of venue…. PA? you wouldn't know it was there, (until you turn it off).
